36 Artists’ Books from Emily Carr University
Curated by Patrik Andersson
This exhibition strives to be out of context. This is not an easy task when faced with the fact that all the art work included has been chosen from a very specific context. Twelve graduate students in the Visual Art and Media stream of Emily Carr University’s Masters of Applied Arts program were asked by their research professor Patrik Andersson to produce individual artist books using only appropriated visual material bound by a cover containing no more than one word. As a research assignment, each artist was also asked to contextualize their own practice in relation to other artists by choosing two artist books from the Ian Wallace Artist Book Collection at Emily Carr University Library. Through this process, a total of 36 artist books are shown in both an attempt to find a context for these emerging artistic practices while simultaneously pushing their findings beyond a determined research praxis.
The exhibition features work by Sean Arden, Vanessa Arnold, Marian Bantjes, Matthew Buckingham, Luca Buvoli, Myron Campbell, Cheryl Carpenter, Andrew Dadson, Matias Faldbakken, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Elisa Ferrari, Kristina Fiedrich, Naoya Hatakeyama, Antonia Hirsch, Kristan Horton, Patricia Huljnen, Stephanie Jonsson, Edwardo Kac, Michael Landy, Gareth Long, Euan Macdonald, David Maljkovic, Christian Marclay, Massimiliano Gioni, Matthew Monahan, Luke Parnell, Richard Prince, Avital Ronell, Dieter Roth, Katherine Soucie, Adam Stenhouse, Derek Sullivan, Krzysztof Wodiczko, David Vaisbord, Volker Gerling and Gunji Yusuke.
