Workshop on Sunday March 29th at 2 pm:
Walking and Seeing
In this workshop we will use walking and seeing as a way to simultaneously reacquaint ourselves with our bodies, discover the space we share, and create a shared and emerging choreography.
During the gallery hours this final week, Natalie Tin Yin Gan and Francesca Frewer will be in residence.
Our process is an inquiry into gesture and what it means to perform a free action. If, as Debord says, our gestures no longer belong to us but have become merely empty facsimiles, how are we to perform free actions, should we heed André Lepecki’s call that “the dancer’s task is to search [for] and enact . . . freedom, over and over again”?
Francesca Frewer is an emerging dance artist from Vancouver, BC. She trained with Out Innerspace Dance Theatre’s training program Modus Operandi, during which time she had the opportunity to perform works by artistic directors Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond, Shay Keubler, Wen Wei Wang, Science Friction, and Serge Bennathan. Since then, she has worked with SFU MFA graduate Daisy Thompson on her thesis work entitled Re-marks on Source Material, as well as apprenticing with MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society (Bamboozled, Time Machine) and the plastic orchid factory (_post). Francesca has had the privilege of having her work presented in The Contingency Plan Dance Collective’s The Interplay Project, Dance: made in Canada’s Series 8:08, and Lake Studios Berlin’s Unfinished Fridays. She and collaborator Natalie Tin Yin Gan look forward to continuing their research on their current project through An Exact Vertigo after performing its first phase at the Sociabank Dance Centre’s performance series 12 Minutes Max.
Natalie Tin Yin Gan is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in physical theatre performance and choreography. She is based in Vancouver with a double degree in Contemporary Dance and International Studies from Simon Fraser University. Natalie continued her studies for two seasons with pre-professional company Modus Operandi. She toured with Mascall Dance in 2009 and 2012 and apprenticed with MACHiNENOiSY Dance Theatre in 2013.
Natalie actively pursues research outside of dance contexts, seeking to hone a well-rounded, politically-informed, and rigorous approach to art-making. Her choreography has been presented in several local festivals and venues. Her most recent work, NINEEIGHT, will be returning to Toronto for the CanAsian International Dance Festival this Spring. Natalie has received numerous Vancouver residencies, awarded to honour her contributions to community arts engagement. Natalie is the co-Artistic Director of interdisciplinary arts company Hong Kong Exile (www.hongkongexile.com)
