Volunteer Board Officer | Immediate Appointment

UNIT/PITT is seeking a Board Treasurer to join our Board of Directors for an immediate appointment. This is a key governance role that works closely with our Executive Director and Board to support the financial health, sustainability, and accountability of the organization.

With a recently appointed Executive Director, this is an opportunity not only to steward existing financial systems, but also to help shape financial procedures and working rhythms that support a healthy, values-aligned organization.

  • Term: 2 years
  • Time commitment: Approximately 4-8 hours per month
  • Meetings: Quarterly board meetings + AGM
    • Meetings are generally in-person at UNIT/PITT, with a remote option

Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Oversight

  • Meet with the Executive Director (Ali Bosley) monthly to:
    • Review financial reports and key documents
    • Stay abreast of the organization’s financial position and overall health
    • Support financial strategy, forecasting, and year-over-year planning

Board Reporting & Leadership

  • Present and lead the finance update (with the ED) at quarterly board meetings, including:
    • Reporting on current finances and projections
    • Presenting annual operating plans and budgets for board approval 

Checks, Balances & Risk Management

  • Act as a key financial check and balance by:
    • Serving as a signing authority
    • Providing oversight on spending and cash flow
    • Supporting responsible grant spending and debt management (when applicable

Year-End & External Coordination

  • Work with the Executive Director and external accountant at fiscal year-end to:
    • Support preparation of year-end financial statements
    • Assist with operating grant increase applications and related financial materials

Systems & Process Development

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to:
    • Review, refine, and define financial procedures and protocols
    • Help ensure systems work well for the finance team, board, and broader organization

Who We’re Looking For

Required

  • Some experience with financial management, bookkeeping, or financial oversight
  • Comfort reviewing financial statements and asking good governance-level questions
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development as needed

Strongly Preferred / Highly Valued

  • Experience with or demonstrated understanding of:
    • Non-profit or registered charity finances
    • Grant funding, reporting, and restricted funds
    • Artist-run centres or community-based organizations
    • Credit facilities and cash-flow management
  • Lived experience in the arts and/or community sector
  • Prior board experience is an asset but not required
