Elizabeth Fischer - Orphans and DogsOpening Friday, June 12, 8pm (followed by a performance by DarkBlueworld at China Cloud, 10pm). Gallery hours Tuesday-Saturday, noon-5pm.

UNIT/PITT is proud to present a survey of work by Vancouver artist, musician, and writer Elizabeth Fischer. Well known from bands such as Animal Slaves and DarkBlueWorld, Fischer has also exhibited her visual and new media art both locally and internationally. This exhibition combines diverse work — paintings, drawings, gig posters and CD covers, and digital prints — spanning three decades.

Fischer’s work demonstrates meticulous attention to line, colour and composition, executed in a way that appears spontaneous and perhaps even effortless; however, the technical attainment is not an end in itself, but a means of conveying stories and impressions which are radically honest in their approach. Alongside prints and paintings, the exhibition includes a large collection of gig posters, which are equally impressive in their execution, and are positioned firmly outside of art-market systems of scarcity and speculation by virtue of their free public distribution.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book, Orphans and Dogs, containing Elizabeth Fischer’s writing and translations, along with digital illustrations, co-published by UNIT/PITT and Publication Studio Vancouver. The book is partly adapted from an online storytelling project of the same name.

Elizabeth Fischer is a Vancouver-based visual artist, writer, and musician. A graduate of the L’Ecole Des Beaux-Arts De Montreal, she has exhibited and performed internationally, and has released CDs and records with Animal Slaves and DarkBlueWorld.
