ABOUT THE DESIGN + ARTIST

EARTH’S GREAT HAVEN TEE. Will’s t-shirt design considers spiritual knowledge and cyclicity, acknowledged as GNOSIS. It is accompanied by an ‘Invocation’ written in the Eggshell Ideographic Body (EIB)—Will’s constructed language as it appears in his Eggshell Comics series. Beside the UNIT/PITT logo are I Ching Hexagrams 36 and 24, which provide further material for reflection on death, seasonal rotation, darkness, rebirth, and the emergence of new light.

The golden flash on the front of the shirt signifies the brief existence we hold in our bodily forms; best explained by Elegant Effendi (a corpse), from author Orhan Pamuk’s My Name is Red:

Before my birth there was infinite time, and after my death, inexhaustible time.
I never thought of it before: I’d been living luminously between two eternities of darkness.

Will Dereume is a Vancouver based designer, illustrator, and cartoonist. His personal work is focused on a world called Eggshell. The world’s inhabitants are semi-pictographic characters who work in synchronicity and discord, to collectively function like a language. Drawing on mythology, magical symbolism, and folk psychology, Will understands comics as a channel where the ambiguous and felt can become material, while complex ideas are read intuitively and understood empathically.
