About

Non-Regular is an artist’s book by Terra Poirier, bringing together contributions by 28 instructors and artists speaking candidly about the conditions of their labour.

Contract teaching appointments are increasingly standard practice at Canadian post-secondary schools. At Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) in 2016-2017, non-regular instructors were delivering 56.5% of course sections. Though the university depends on their labour, their importance is not reflected in their working conditions, which include lack of adequate work space, under-compensation and no job security.

While the book comes out of Emily Carr University in Vancouver, much of the content applies to any post-secondary school that relies on precarious teaching labour.

The first edition of Non-Regular was published by UNIT/PITT in October 2018, in time for the start of collective bargaining for BC colleges and universities.

Terra Poirier is a Vancouver photographer, book artist and filmmaker interested in artists’ labour and solidarity. Her other work is concerned with memory and contested spaces.
