borrowed belonging
November 30 – December 20, 2024
Opening reception November 30, 2024, 6-9pm
UNIT/PITT and art ecosystem invite you to join us for the opening reception of borrowed belonging. The exhibition features a collection of sculpture, installation, prints, poetry and plant medicines created by art ecosystem collective members karmella benedito de barros, Maymoona Gaid, Lexi Mellish-Mingo and Sevin Shabankareh during their time participating in UNIT/PITT’s The Garden, The Gallery artist-in-residence program.
This residency and exhibition take place on the unceded traditional territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations near the village of Sen̓áḵw.
borrowed belonging features found materials from UNIT/PITT’s garden and natural elements gathered in the surrounding neighborhood. The exhibition platforms the collective’s ever-changing relationship to the land and plant neighbours, while serving as a practice in place-making and temporary nesting during their UNIT/PITT residency.
We look forward to welcoming you on November 30! Garden-inspired appies will be available, created by Maymoona, and a selection of special seasonal beverages will be crafted by Sevin.
Skin Healing Salves (cottonwood, sweetgrass, calendula, beeswax, sweet almond oil) created during art ecosystem’s Salve Making Workshop on October 27, 2024 will be for sale by donation at the exhibition opening ($10-$30 sliding scale). All funds will be donated to @tresmariaslebanon: a community organization of migrant women in Lebanon.
ABOUT THE COLLECTIVE
Founded in 2021, art ecosystem is a QTBIPOC youth led artistic community care project based on the unceded traditional territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Hosting workshops and gatherings while engaging in creative collaborations throughout the local community is at the root of art ecosystem’s current work. The collective functions as a web of connections that has grown through sharing and creating art together, nurturing relationships to the land and place while prioritizing accessibility and visibility of QTBIPOC, disabled artists and radical creatives in community online and offline. Currently, art ecosystem focuses on curating gatherings, workshops and creative collaborations within the arts while members grow their own creative and organizational practices.
