To celebrate UNIT/PITT’s first summer in its new gallery space, we are offering a three-month summer studio residency opportunity for an individual, collaborative, or collective of artists whose work can engage with our garden space and gallery, culminating in an exhibition in October 2024.
We are now accepting expressions of interest for the residency program. The deadline is May 15, 2024. We will notify successful applicants on May 30, 2024.
The residency will take place during the months of July, August, and September. Applicants may apply as individuals, collaborative pairs, or as a small collective.
Fill out the application form by May 15: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScpwMoW1HDHxXnoldwl8V7yj_B8mGciYJnmTt093JuRWWS83A/viewform
Who should apply
Vancouver-based artists, or those who will be based in Vancouver for the duration of the residency. UNIT/PITT cannot provide accommodations for out of town artists.
This residency is intended to support emerging artists. Please note that the term “emerging” does not indicate an age range, but rather a career stage.
We encourage artists to apply who are currently without a dedicated studio space, are from low-income backgrounds, or for whom paying studio rent is a barrier for their artistic production.
We additionally encourage artists to apply who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, or disabled to apply, as well as artists whose work engages with decolonial themes, given the residency’s inherent connection with space and land use. Please note that there are some accessibility limitations with our space.
Additional details about our space are listed within the application form as they relate to what kinds of practices and projects we can support.
Adjudication Process
Applications will be evaluated by UNIT/PITT’s Programming Committee. Applicants are encouraged to submit a proposal demonstrating their intention to engage with and utilize both their studio space and the garden, and their commitment to exhibiting within an exhibition in UNIT/PITT’s space from October-December 2024. Their work may draw inspiration, materials, reflections, or processes from UNIT/PITT’s garden, neighbourhood, building etc.
Applicants will be juried according to the following guidelines:
- Feasibility
- Relevance
- Quality of past works
- Engagement with thematic
- Self-declared need for studio space
What UNIT/PITT can offer:
- Free and unlimited access to the facility for the duration of the residency, which includes studio space (in the gallery), a kitchenette, bathroom with industrial sink, and garden with a large covered gathering area.
