ecco landscape: The Art of Sound Mapping

Sound maps have re-emerged as a popular medium for recontextualizing and re-presenting land and ecology, blending artistic and creative practices like soundscapes and experimental aural interventions with scientific, analytical methods such as geographical data analysis. Given that the discipline is so enmeshed with technological advancement, the practice is highly fluid and subject to rapid change; as such, regular theoretical, ethical, and technical interventions are into the practice’s ever-changing processes and methodologies are essential.

Join us for a workshop led by Vancouver-based sound artist Marianne Thodas, featuring guest lectures by Tlingit and Tahltan artist & musician Edzi’u and theorist & co-founder of World Soundscape Project Barry Traux. This immersive experience will provide a mix of discussions and practical skills-building, delving into the technical and theoretical aspects of sound mapping using Kits Beach as a case study. Over the course of the three-day workshop, participants will work together to create and share their original sound maps.

Covered in the workshop:

  • Sound recording techniques
  • Various methods for presenting a sound map
  • Decolonial approaches to landscape
  • Broader ethical implications of mapping locations
