If you’ve contacted UNIT/PITT this last season, you may have noticed that Brit Bachmann’s title has changed to Outgoing Director. Over the next few months, Brit will transition to Development Coordinator & ReIssue Publisher as the Board of Directors seeks out and hires a new Director for UNIT/PITT.

The Board of Directors is grateful to Brit for leading the organization since May 2019 through many significant changes and periods of uncertainty resulting from the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brit developed and supported the dynamic suite of programs that UNIT/PITT has presented over the last three years, including I SPY… a disposable camera mail art project, Wrong Wave Festival, ReIssue, Helen’s Quarantine Cookbook, La Commune 2021 Free School & Artist Residency, and Tear It Down: catalogue for a once-ephemera poster kiosk project, 2018-2019 (2020). Under Brit’s artistic direction, UNIT/PITT was awarded runner-up for the 2021 Lacey Prize, and shared the 2020 Audain Prize with 11 fellow artist-run centres. Brit also initiated the Archive Committee’s project to sort and catalogue UNIT/PITT’s hard-copy materials and print ephemera. Her impact on the organization and its position within the broader artist-run community has been profound. The Board of Directors is delighted to have Brit continue working with UNIT/PITT as Development Coordinator & ReIssue Publisher, and to assist with the onboarding of a new Director this Winter.

“UNIT/PITT was one of the first artist-run centres that I interacted with over a decade ago, as an emerging artist new to Vancouver. It’s only fitting that the society has also given me my first true experience of leading an organization, and the opportunity to embody artist-run culture and values in my day-to-day. Even at its most overwhelming, UNIT/PITT and its community of artists, writers and curators have been sources of inspiration and motivation. Thank you to the Board of Directors for their confidence in my leadership over the years, and my ARC peers for the support. I’m excited to work with the next person to steward UNIT/PITT’s rich cultural legacy.”

–Brit Bachmann, Outgoing Director

UNIT/PITT has been quiet lately, but we’ve been stirring a lot of cauldrons! Our facilities project is on pause, but the third edition of I SPY… a disposable camera mail art project & program catalogue is underway, along with several ReIssue essays, and an exciting Archives Committee project on the 1986 Strategies for Survival International Artists’ Conference. In the coming days, the Board of Directors will formally announce our call for a Director. We hope that you’ll share the call with your communities, and continue keeping an eye on UNIT/PITT and ReIssue programming this Fall.
