236 E Pender is getting better all the time! We are really excited about our upcoming opening God Save the Queen curated by Chris Bose, and our Grand Opening/Fundraiser, both of which are happening this Friday (September 13, part of #swarm14).
We have preserved some wonderful features of the 1930’s era building: the 20 foot ceilings in the gallery space and the main floor studios have been revived, we refinished the beautiful fir hardwood floors on the top floor, and we will be keeping the three enormous skylights for some natural light in the studios upstairs as well. However, we need your help on the last leg of this giant endeavour. You can support the completion of the new space by donating online, or you can get a little something for yourself as well by purchasing any one of our publications.

During all of this change, we have also continued with our programming. By using temporary walls we have already been able to host two exhibitions this summer. In June there was I.O.U. in participation with the annual Art Waste Festival, and the enigmatic Whatever This Is It Won’t Last Long was open from July-August. You can keep up to date on our upcoming projects and show your support by becoming UNIT/PITT member.

Our goal with this building is to create and sustain a hub for critical artist-run culture. While other venues and organizations are under threat, we are working hard to make 236 East Pender a stable platform for the next 15 years and beyond. Your assistance now will help us build this future. Seriously, if you have thought of donating to the Pitt before, now is the time to do it.
If you would like to donate money, but don’t want to do so online, you can contact us at info@helenpittgallery.com.
You can also show your support by attending our Grand Opening / SWARM Afterparty / Fundraiser on Friday, September 13th at 10pm. Come out this Friday for DJs, art, dancing, and an opportunity to see in person what we have done with this inspiring new space.
