Wrong Wave panel announced

This year’s Wrong Wave takes place next week! Starting on Wednesday, November 7, Unit/Pitt presents four days of artist/musician collaborations, performances, and dialogue curated by Research + Presentation Collective, for only $10 (if you buy a festival pass, almost a 50% savings over paying for each performance).

The performance schedule was released about a week ago (you can find it here), and now we’re ready to announce the details of the conversation that will close the festival on Saturday, November 10, at the Western Front. We’ll also be releasing some previews over the next few days.

This panel includes artists and musicians who engage their audience or viewers through multiple platforms of music, visual art and otherwise. Tanner Matt, Soledad Munoz and Ellis Sam have all contributed as performers, participants or coordinators to collaborative projects with Research + Presentation Collective. Each of them will be considering their own practices as well as their participation in the collaborative and transdisciplinary climate of contemporary music and art. The conversation will focus on fostering a dialogic exchange between the panelists and the moderators as they reflect on the conflation of disciplines, the collaborative tendencies between artist and musicians, the oscillation of mediums and platforms and an overall commentary on the festival itself as outlet for such tendencies to effectuate.

Panelists:

Tanner Matt is an artist and musician from Vancouver Island. He is one third of electronic music project The Aquarian Foundation who made their Vancouver debut at Unit/Pitt last spring in a series of sound art and music performances entitled “No Shows” curated by fellow panelist, Ellis Sam. Visual aspects are integral to his musical endeavours and frequently collaborate with visual artists in Aquarian Foundation’s sets. He recently contributed visuals in New Forms Festival 12 and other various events hosted at studio spaces around Vancouver. Tanner is one half of research and curatorial initiative Peace Library who publishes tape compilations and utilizes the free commons. Peace Library is in residence at Unit/Pitt following Wrong Wave 2012.

Soledad Munoz is a interdisciplinary artist living and studying in Vancouver. Born in Toronto, Canada and raised in Rancagua, Chile, Soledad studied Film Arts at The Art and Social Science University of Santiago (ARCIS). After returning to Canada, she completed the Textile Arts Program at Capilano University. Soledad has continued to develop her practice in Textile Arts mostly focussing on weaving, acquiring skills that are now the material and conceptual base for her practice. Through the combination of new and old technologies she explores the ever-changing woven spaces we inhabit, navigating outside of language and representation. Soledad is currently continuing her education while developing a body of work composed of performance, sound based installations and environment responsive pieces, which come alive through the interaction with the viewer. In 2012 Soledad received The City of Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award for Emerging Artist in Craft and Design. Soledad contributed a performance with sound-conductive wearables to “No Shows” last spring at Unit/Pitt Projects.

Ellis Sam (of Flash Palace, Plays:Four) is Vancouver based artist and musician. Ellis curated a series of sound art and music performances entitled “No Shows” last spring at Unit/Pitt projects in cooperation with Research + Presentation Collective’s reading room project, Research + Presentation Centre. He is a BFA candidate for Critical and Cultural Practices at Emily Carr University of Art + Design with an additional focus on sculpture.

Wrong Wave: Art Rock Believes in Reincarnation is curated by Research + Presentation Collective (Vancouver), an on-going cultural operation composed of a network of artists, writers, musicians and curators who work interchangeably on projects that focus on the meeting of art, writing and music disciplines. Their impetus is rooted in creative research methods and the culmination of findings through multiple exhibition platforms akin to performance, installation, pedagogy and printed matter.
